Happy Hour @ TNT

To pick up on the theme of Austin’s best happy hours, it would be wrong to put off mentioning my favorite, Taco’s and Tequila (otherwise known as TNT) any longer. This restaurant puts a twist on everything it does. The interior is adorned with tequila on draft in the bar, and if those aren’t what you’re hankering for, the metal shelf hanging above the bar is stocked with over 130 premium tequilas. TNT also has two continuous projectors and a DJ set up in the bar to keep you entertained if your company es cojo. It also offers a trendy menu with flights of tequila, and my favorite, flights of queso.  Screen shot 2014-02-27 at 6.08.29 PM

TNT taco bar

But not only is TNT a great spot to entertain, but it is also a cheap-eat. It’s happy hour has terrific deals on wells, margaritas, mojitos, sangria, mimosas, bloody mary’s, and glasses of wine. What’s more is it’s build-your-own-taco-bar from 4-6:30 with your choice of filling from picadillo, brisket, verde chicken, or black bean for only $1.50!! I am somewhat of a regular here and go almost every Monday, as it is all day. As you can see, I loaded my taco with a tomatillo sauce and other garnishes up at the taco bar.

+Other Specials

TNT also features one tequila every month, with March’s being Milagro. Every Thursday, custom-made cocktails made with Milagro or any other of it’s 130 premium tequilas will be crafted by the mixologists for TNT’s weekly Tequila Underground. It also offers guacamole prepared table-side on a trendy looking cart. I have yet to try it, as I already get a free appetizer, queso, for living in the building TNT is located in. Ironically, I have also yet to be there for brunch, which made it to Thrillist’s top 40 best boozy brunch deals in Austin.  I will definitely be checking that out soon.

Happy Hour @ Chuy’s

When it comes to leaving home for college, realizing you’re parents aren’t there to pick up the bill or even cook you a nice meal can be startling to some, like me. I have made more meals of mac & cheese or just plain cereal than I care to admit, and after four years of being a full-time student with a small allowance every month, I have found the secret to making the cash stretch fashionably. That being said, I will make it a priority every week to let you in on my secrets around Austin. Today’s big find, Happy Hour at Chuy’s!

/Where to Sit

You might be inclined to see the host so that you can sit with the families and such. Keyword there, families. You are not with yours, you might be with friends, but those friends don’t even have the wallet or time to spend in the dining rooms. Instead, opt for the bar area or an open seating section. In this area you are left to your own devices to get chips, salsa, and free queso. Yes you heard that right. FREE QUESO. Chuy’s has this in their classic Cadaillac’s hood for grabs during happy hour monday through friday.

/What to Order

Now that you have an endless supply of chips and dip, it’s time to move your focus to the main course. One thing to mention is that sitting in the cocktail area only offers you the opportunity to order off the appetizer menu. Not to worry! What my sister and I typically do is order the appetizer plate shown below and split everything down the middle. That’s 4 quesadillas, 4 flautas, and 4 nachos, not to mention more queso! I know from experience that this platter is typically about $10. I’m not even sure if a fast-food combo could be less than $5 a person!

Try Chuy’s out, you won’t be disappointed! I am sure there is one, if not two, near you as they are no longer an Austin hole-in-the-wall TexMex spot, and I would love to hear about your experience in the comments below.
